Wood Cookstove's New Life

This wood cook stove was rusting on the side of a garage. After some cleaning and modifying a few parts, it's as good as new. This thing heated the house and cooked all three meals plus desert. This picture was taken the night before the smoke from the interior wildfires arrived. For the following week, the smoke blanketed the valley. The only road here closed. Just finished the live roof in time for the winter. There is 5 - 6 inches of moss on the roof which slows water run-off & helps keep the heat in.It's been raining for a month, but the cabin is warm and dry with a wood-stove donated from a friend.

A week ago, the local emergency co-ordinator said this project was dead, but after we rallied the town & the outside government, the Sallompt river project went through. By the time it was actually underway, more than half the money was already spent elsewhere.There should be a wall blocking water flow down the left (new) side. But atleast the right side has been curved out. It should help

To The Hot Springs

The worn trailhead to the hot springs was a welcome sight. This is the smaller of the two tubs. It overlooks an island and fed from the outspout of the larger tub. Sunday, this Pine Marten was peering through the window.He (?)'s has been running around here since last summer. These cridders eat mice, so we encourage them. Martens feed mainly in old growth forrest areas, but we've caught him eating the cat food in the garage.

Interior Bears Moving In

No pictures yet, but lots of signs. I heard that the Bella Coola bears are fat and sleeping, but just like "Grizzily Man", the interior bears are coming down off the prairie. There's still salmon swiming and dying up and down the river.We counted 18 eagles yesterday morning. The dogs won't let us sleep late with these giant birds outside the window.

Easterly winds brought artic temperatures to the valley, not seen in nine years. The artic air mass also brought in the biggest snowfall in years. Salmon are dying up and down the river. Too bad, the bears are most likely hibernated by now.Many eagles fly & perch nearby. The dogs are out fishing alot.

Waiting for the Rains

There are about a half dozen burnt and hollowed trees in the woods.Local folks say these stumps were used to smoke fish.The trees are all located within a few hundred yards of the river.

New Swimming Hole Found

We spotted a swimming hole from the top of this mountain. It was just a short climb down through the meadows of heather. Finally found a warm swimming hole. It's like swimming in a dream. The rock on the left side heats up and is a great place to sit. To the right is an earthen damn that drops off thousands of feet. The water is crystal clear and only about 8 - 9 feet deep. First Journey up to the Sub Alpine The Bella Coola Guide that mentioned this mountain road is typically buried in snow pack until mid July, but we thought we'd try it June 3rd.
